WHAT IS OUTER BANKS ON NETFLIX?
‘Outer Banks’ is a show about 16 year-olds being played by 27 year-olds in what can be explained as a Beverly Hills 90210 / Saved By The Bell hybrid meets Hollister & Abercrombie and Fitch. Set in present day North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the Outer Banks are real barrier islands found off the coast of North Carolina and Virginia. While the island going by the name of ‘Figure 8’ is fictional, the show was filmed in and around Charleston South Carolina which is what gives it’s authentic look and feel.
IS OUTER BANKS WORTH THE WATCH?
Hmm… Well, if you are a teenager I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t be. And us for us older folk, I think it would fall under the category of guilty pleasure. And with not much to watch with quarantine goin on and all (yes, that’s my excuse 😄), it took me about 4 episodes to get passed the show’s initial corny ass nature before the plot finally got into the thick of things which is, “Teenagers hunting for gold”. And that in and of itself, in an era of recycled culture sounds like a Goonies reboot. And it is, only with a touch of 90210 and Saved By the Bell as mentioned prior. Whatever the case, modern day treasure hunting teens hasn’t been executed in a while and it sure hasn’t been done in the Netflix series format which at the end of the day, adds to the longevity of Outer Banks.
Ultimately, this show is about a bunch of models or pretty people if you will running around town bumping into drama at pretty much every corner. Whether it be criminals shooting guns in a senseless boat chase… *realistic* 😉, being held at gun point by drug dealers or even prominent adults getting in on the action, the sense of drama is indubitable. Oh yes and lets not forget teenagers falling 30 feet off a tower only to come out of it with a concussion and a broken wrist😂 . Nevertheless, the show goes on – and we kept watching.
hipeREVIEW OF OUTER BANKS ON NETFLIX
As for our review, we are still in the impressions stage as we are finishing off episode 7 in what is set to be a 10 episode inaugural season. Honestly man, it’s pretty good, it isn’t so bad. I for one have always had a thing for teen movies even way before the release of American Pie. I still would watch ‘Just One Of The Guys’ if it were on today and everybody remembers “The Breakfast Club”. Bottom line, no matter how old you are, everyone has a place in their heart for teen movies or in this case, TV Shows.
Our current ranking would probably fall in the 79th percentile giving Outer Banks a solid B-. And as you will further get to know our review standards, that’s pretty good!. Netflix’s Outer Banks is a nice dose of light hearted, teenage, treasure hunting fun with a well cast crew of lovable losers (Pogues), and villainous douches (Kooks). Their rivalry and countless encounters through out season 1 calls for a ton of head shaking, laughable moments but at the end of the day the show is fun. You don’t have to think and there is a healthy dose of suspense and mystery packed on the ride while our heroes try and find the gold and escape a life marred in poverty
OUTER BANKS FALLS APART AT THE SEAMS IN EPISODE 8
Oh my good lord… shows seem to have certain breaking points that either take them to the land deemed creative genius or Hollywood hell cemetery. I mean what a disaster, what a complete and utter nightmare. hipeGALAXY’s TV division was supposed to only cover shows we deem worthy, but once we realized we wouldn’t have much of a section, we decided to lash back out at those who took our precious time.
OUTER BANKS CAST OF CHARACTERS
The Outer Banks cast is pretty well done. Douchey characters do a great job of playing it extra douchey and after watching some of their instagrams, you have to question how much acting is actually involved 😄. Anyhow, on with the show.
JON BOOKER RUTLEDGE (JON B.) PLAYED BY CHASE STOKES
New comer to the Hollywood limelight Chase Stokes takes on the leading role of troubled teen who goes by the name of Jon B. Now I am not sure if this is paying some sort of homage to Disaster Artists / The Room’s Chris R. But… I guess it’s an Outer Banks thing nonetheless. Chase does a solid job of playing the overgrown 16 year old as he charms the fancy Sarah Cameron (played by Madelyn Cline) away from her Douchey boyfriend Topper (Austin North).
In an interview with Chicks In The Office, Chase actually claims he initially turned down the lead in the Netflix hit only to be talked back into it shortly after.
SARAH CAMERON PLAYED BY MADELYN CLINE 😍
The lovely Madelyn Cline plays the female lead and Jon B’s love interest. Yes, kind of a spoiler but not really because you see it coming from a mile away. I have to tip my hat to Madelyn Cline as her charm and stunning good looks kept me entertained for what I considered a rocky start for the series. Coming from a prominent family, Sarah Cameron gets tired of ‘Kook Life’ and starts doing hoodrat things with her new Pogue friends
